Uhuru Torch race launches, inspects 9 development projects worth 2.9bn/- in its tour of Mwanza region

MWANZA: THE Uhuru Torch has successfully finished its 113.8km race in Kwimba District, Mwanza, with 9 projects worth 2.9bn/- laid, launched and inspected during the race.

Speaking today at the Sumve bus stand ground,  Kwimba District Commissioner, Mr Ng’wilabuzu Ludigija said the projects involve the education, health, water, roads and community development sectors, including youth and citizen empowerment.

Ludigija said the projects are located in Sumve, Mwagi, Nyambiti, Ngudu, Mwakilyambiti, Nghundi and Hungumalwa wards.

Similarly, Mr Ludigija said Kwimba District has continued to implement the Freedom Torch message regarding environmental protection, where it has so far succeeded in planting 862,654 trees out of the target of 1,500,000 trees, equivalent to 57.5 percent.

He said the district has also continued with forest conservation in preparation for the harvesting and sale of carbon dioxide, as well as preserving 16 water and environmental sources.

In the area of clean cooking energy use, He said a total of 35,742 citizens have been educated on the use of the energy, while 73,380 citizens are already using clean energy.

He said a total of 30 groups of small-scale miners, including youth, have been granted mining licenses, a move aimed at increasing citizens’ participation in economic activities.

He said in the area of economic empowerment, as of August 14, 2026, a total of 184 groups had been registered in the NeST System.

In addition, He said 10 percent of the council’s internal revenue, totaling 883m/-, was provided to 22 women’s groups, 18 youth groups and 15 groups of people with disabilities as interest-free loans.

On his side Uhuru Torch Leader 2026 , Mr Wazo Mwang’onda, urged the people of Kwimba to continue the fight against corruption and drugs.

He urged the people of Kwimba to focus on good nutrition and the use of clean cooking energy. He urged the people to continue to be close to the government and continue to contribute to development activities.

He urged the people of Kwimba to continue to maintain peace and stability in order to bring development to the nation.
