Uhuru Torch to launch 101.9bn/- Mwanza projects

MWANZA: MWANZA Region is set to launch 51 development projects worth more than 101.9bn/- when this year’s Uhuru Torch begins its tour of the region in Ukerewe District today.

Speaking to reporters in Mwanza yesterday, Regional Commissioner Said Mtanda said the projects are intended to promote development and ensure public investments deliver tangible benefits to wananchi.

“Mwanza Region expects to receive the Uhuru Torch from Mara Region on August 10. The Torch will pass through all eight councils, where it will inspect, launch and lay foundation stones for various development projects,” Mr Mtanda said.

He said the Torch will visit projects in sectors such as health, education, water supply, roads, electricity and other public services. “We have made all necessary preparations and I urge wananchi to come out in large numbers to welcome the Uhuru Torch and participate fully in the activities that have been planned,” he said.

Mr Mtanda said this year’s Uhuru Torch carries the national message of strengthening peace, unity and solidarity while encouraging citizens to participate fully in development initiatives. He also urged wananchi to take advantage of social services that will be offered along the route, including free health screening and voluntary blood donation.

According to the Regional Commissioner, the Uhuru Torch race is expected to attract residents from across Mwanza Region as it moves through the eight councils over the coming days.

He said the event will provide an opportunity for wananchi to witness the implementation of governmentfunded projects and assess the progress of development initiatives being carried out in their areas.

The Uhuru Torch race is conducted annually to promote national unity, peace and participation in development activities while highlighting projects implemented in different parts of the country.
