DAR ES SALAAM: THREE Tanzania’s students win a trip to Poland after ascending as top speakers during the European Union Debate Contest held at the University of Dar es Salaam.
The debate intended to strengthen youth’s communication skills, critical thinking, collaboration and problem solving skills by highlighting relevant solutions to socio-economic challenges.
The motion of the debate was titled “Having your own business guarantees a sustainable income than a regular job,”
Speaking to the Daily News shortly after awarding top speakers over the weekend, Poland’s Deputy Ambassador to Tanzania, Ms Katarzyna Sobiecka said she was delighted by the abilities of the speakers.
“I am very impressed by the quality of this debate, the contestants were real fantastic, were so well prepared, they were so enthusiastic and energetic. That is why we decided to offer the top three winners of this competition a trip to Poland,” Ms Sobiecka said.
The three speakers who emerged as winners in the total of 400 contestants from various universities across the country are Ms Careen Ndika and Kijafaraja Maduhu, of the University of Dar es Salaam and Ms Diana Shabani of the Dar es Salaam-Tumaini University.
Ms Sobiecka said the fully funded trip which covers transport and accommodation will be organized this summer, spanning a week.
She said the programmes of the trip include visiting Warsaw, the capital city of Poland in which the students will explore its long-built history including architectures, innovative technologies and culture such as theatre.
She said the trip also reflects Poland’s commitment to enhancing people to people relations in which the Tanzania’s students will forge friendships with their counterparts in Warsaw while identifying profound opportunities for their academics and career development.
“We believe that building people to people relations and networking usually bring opportunities. I hope their stay in Poland will build up their competences in communication,” Ms Sobiecka said.

Earlier, Ambassador of the European Union Development in Tanzania and East African Community (EAC), Ms Christine Grau commended all the participants for demonstrating inquisitiveness and critical thinking which enabled them present research based arguments which are relevant.
“What I have seen today. There was fire in this room, quite impressed by the passion that was here,” she said.
A debater from the opposing side, Ms Careen Ndika (21) who emerged as the overall best speaker attributed the victory to early preparations including research which made her won audience and judges’ supports as she presented concrete points with conviction.
“Before the debate I interviewed about 20 employed people to understand effectively why regular job is vital,” she told the Daily News.
Reacting to the debate’s topic many speakers on the opposing side said regular job ensures social-economic security and professional development.
Conversely, on the proposing side, debaters including Ms Diana Abdi (23) said an own operated business guarantees freedom to dream big, create jobs as well as generational wealth at large.
Ms Abdi said own led businesses can address the global pressing challenge of unemployment saying entrepreneurship is a way to go.
