TZ commended for youthfocused climate change

KILIMANJARO: TANZANIA has been commended for its programmes aimed at educating students and youth on climate change, a move expected to promote environmental sustainability for future generations.
Deputy Chairman of the German-based non-governmental organisation KonradAdenauer-Stiftung (KAS), Mr Hermann Gröhe, made the commendation over the weekend during his visit to projects supported by the institution in Kilimanjaro Region.
“Climate change is a major global challenge that requires collective efforts to address. It is commendable to involve students and young people early so that the fight against climate change becomes sustainable,” he said.
He added that equipping students with environmental awareness and values is essential for long-term conservation efforts.
“It is encouraging to see that Tanzanians are already undertaking this important work, with visible results as students actively participate in climate-related initiatives,” he noted.

Mr Gröhe, who is also president of the German Red Cross and a former Minister for Health in Germany, said KAS is working closely with the Kilimanjaro Consortium for Development and Environment (KCDE) to address climate change challenges and promote a better future for all living beings.
Presenting at the event held at St John Paul II Secondary School in Kilema, Moshi District, KCDE Founder and Chief Executive Officer Prof Fr Aidan Msafiri said climate change poses significant health risks.
He stressed that addressing the challenge requires joint efforts at both local and global levels, hence the collaboration between KAS and KCDE.
“Various projects implemented by our organisations aim, among other things, to empower youth to become future champions in addressing climate change,” he said.
For his part, KAS Country Director in Tanzania, Peter Koch, expressed optimism that students at St John Paul II Secondary School would make good use of the knowledge gained on climate change mitigation.
