Tanzania thrives when Tanganyika, Zanzibar stand united

DAR ES SALAAM: TODAY Tanzania marks Union Day, a living testament to the bold decision in 1964 to unite Tanganyika and Zanzibar into one sovereign nation. That union was not an accident of history; it was an act of vision, courage and compromise. It created stability where fragmentation could have prevailed, expanded opportunity where isolation might have limited growth and forged a shared identity that continues to anchor our progress. From a larger internal market and coordinated infrastructure to stronger diplomacy and collective security, the dividends of unity are tangible and enduring.
Yet unity is not self-sustaining. It must be renewed, defended and deepened by every generation. Our leaders political, religious and cultural carry a special responsibility. They must preach the value of the Union Day in day out, not only on anniversaries but in policy, sermons and public discourse.
Unity is always the cornerstone of any development. When we speak with one voice, we negotiate from strength, invest with confidence and innovate without artificial barriers.
We therefore urge all leaders to reject rhetoric and strategies that inflame division or question the foundations of our Union for short term gain. Ideas that pit one side against another, or that erode trust between citizens, undermine decades of shared achievement. The Union deserves honest debate about improvement, but never careless words that fracture solidarity. Responsible leadership means choosing cohesion over convenience and nationhood over narrow interests.
To the youth of Tanzania, this moment belongs to you. You are the inheritors and the guardians of the Union. Keep it tight. Learn its history, celebrate its diversity and build friendships, businesses and movements that span both sides of our Union. Use your energy to connect, not to divide. Demand accountability from leaders while defending the principles that make accountability meaningful.
As you innovate in technology, arts and enterprise, let your work reflect a united future. Pass this commitment to the generations that follow you, so that the Union is not merely remembered, but continuously strengthened. Let schools, communities and digital spaces become arenas of unity where collaboration outshines suspicion.
On this Union Day, let us recommit with clarity and purpose. Tanzania is strongest when it stands together. The promise of 1964 endures only if we choose it daily in our words, our actions and our ambitions.
