Tanzania sees 12.63 percent increase in number of passengers using air transport services

DODOMA: THE Minister for Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, has said that the number of passengers using air transport services in Tanzania increased by 12.63 percent during the 2025/26 financial year.

Meanwhile, the International Civil Aviation Organization continues to entrust Tanzania with the responsibility of guiding aircraft flying through Burundi’s airspace at altitudes above 25,000 feet.

Professor Mbarawa made the remarks today, May 13, 2026, while presenting the Ministry of Transport’s budget for the 2026/27 financial year in Parliament in Dodoma.

He said that between July 2025 and March 2026, a total of 6.81 million passengers used air transport services, compared to 6.037 million passengers recorded during the same period in the 2024/25 financial year. This represents an increase of 12.63 percent.

“During the same period, 334,750.2 tonnes of cargo were transported out of the country, compared to 331,312.5 tonnes recorded during the corresponding period in the 2024/25 financial year,” said Professor Mbarawa.

In addition, he noted that from July 2025 to March 2026, a total of 189 aircraft were inspected and issued airworthiness certificates to continue operating in the country.

He further stated that the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) has continued to oversee the quality and safety standards of airports across the country to ensure that the aviation sector continues to grow in line with international standards.
