Taifa Stars eye 1bn/- motivation heading to CHAN kick off

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged a reward of 1bn/- to the Tanzanian envoys, Taifa Stars, if they win the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

CHAN, which is jointly hosted by Tanzania and its neighbours, Kenya and Uganda, is scheduled to kick off from August 2nd  to 28th  this year.

Speaking to the media in Dar es Salaam today, July 24, 2025, the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Professor Palamagamba Kabudi, said the reward is part of the government’s motivation to encourage the players to fight with full determination while representing Tanzania.

“If Taifa Stars win the CHAN title, the government will offer a reward of 1bn/-. If the team reaches the final, they will receive 500m/-, and 200m/- if they make it to the semi-finals. In addition, there will be a special ‘Goli la Mama’ (Mama’s Goal) bonus of 20 million for every goal scored in the semi-final,” Prof. Kabudi said.

The government spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, added that every goal scored by Taifa Stars in the group stage will earn the team 10m/-.

He urged the media, artists, and all fans to join the national campaign to support the team as they prepare for CHAN 2024.

Prof. Kabudi also revealed that infrastructure preparations for the tournament are in their final stages. Both the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and Azam Complex have been inspected and approved by experts from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Tanzania will have the honour of hosting the opening match, in which Taifa Stars will face Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on August 2, 2025.

The Prime Minister of Tanzania, Kassim Majaliwa, is expected to officiate the opening match as the chief guest.

The minister stated that the progress in preparations has been largely made possible by the significant investment by the Sixth Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The investment has focused on upgrading training grounds, social services, transportation, accommodation, and healthcare services for all participating teams.

To boost public morale and national excitement, the government will launch the CHAN Singeli Festival, a two-day cultural event to celebrate the opening of the tournament.

According to Prof. Kabudi, ticket prices have been set at affordable rates to ensure wide participation: 2,000/- for regular stands, 5,000/- for VIP B, and  10,000/- for VIP A.

“I urge all Tanzanians to turn out in large numbers to cheer for Taifa Stars and seize the economic and business opportunities that will arise from this major tournament,” Prof. Kabudi concluded.
