Tanzania tables tenders for construction of special schools for nurturing sporting talent

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has announced tenders for the construction of seven sports schools as part of a nationwide plan to nurture sporting talent and expand sports development infrastructure across the country.
Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports Hamis Mwinjuma made the statement at the Parliament in Dodoma today, May 25, 2026, when responding to a question from Nkasi South MP Moses Kaegele, who sought to know the government’s plans to build sports schools in constituencies to help identify and develop football talent.
Elaborating, the deputy minister stated that the government intends to construct 56 sports schools across all regions of the country, with each region expected to have at least two sports schools once the programme is completed.

Additionally, he said that the first phase of the project would involve the construction of seven sports schools in the regions of Singida Region, Tanga Region, Ruvuma Region, Pwani Region, Dodoma Region, Kagera Region and Mtwara Region, adding that tenders for the implementation of the project had already been announced to secure contractors.
According to the deputy minister, completion of the schools will help identify and nurture students’ talents in various sports while allowing them to continue with their academic studies.
He added that in the next phases of implementation, Rukwa Region would also benefit from the programme and is expected to have two sports schools, including facilities focused on football development.
