TACA gears up for 2025 National Chess championship

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Chess Association (TACA) has officially announced that the 2025 National Chess Championship will take place from Saturday to Monday next week at the Russian Cultural Centre in Dar es Salaam, promising an exciting showcase of talent, strategy and sportsmanship.
Speaking during the announcement, TACA Public Relations Officer Mussa Mangula emphasised that the event is part of a broader mission to promote the growth and visibility of chess across the country, particularly among youths.
“This championship is not only about competition, it’s also about nurturing the sport, creating awareness and identifying the players who will go on to represent Tanzania in international arenas,” Mangula stated.
Preparations are already in motion, with registration now open to players from all corners of the country. The participation fee has been set at 20,000/- per player, aiming to make the event inclusive and accessible to chess enthusiasts of all levels.
Mangula encouraged nationwide participation saying, “We want to see more youths and regional clubs represented this year. A higher turnout will raise the level of competition and help us push Tanzanian chess to greater heights.”
The championship will feature both men and women’s categories, with prize money awarded to top performers in each category.

In the Open (Men’s) category, the overall winner will walk away with 500,000/-, the runner-up will earn 400,000/-, third placed will receive 300,000/-, fourth 200,000/- and fifth place 100,000/- respectively.
In the Open Women’s category, the top prize is 250,000/-, followed by 200,000/- for second place, 150,000/- for third, 100,000/- for fourth and 80,000/- for the fifth-place winner respectively.
Mangula also extended appreciation to stakeholders and supporters who have already come on board and encouraged more sponsors and partners to support the initiative.
“We’re grateful for the support received so far, but we still need partners who are passionate about promoting chess and empowering youths through the game,” he said.
The tournament is expected to attract players from across Tanzania, competing not just for titles and cash rewards, but also for the honour of representing the nation in upcoming international competitions.
