SHIMIWI Games celebrate 5 years of success under Samia’s leadership

MWANZA: THE Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports and Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa has commended the successful five-year run of the SHIMIWI Games under the visionary leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Speaking at the ongoing SHIMIWI Games in Mwanza, Msigwa highlighted the government’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant and inclusive sports culture among public servants.

“Our Ministry is committed to ensuring these games are conducted fairly and inclusively. We sincerely thank Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan for her unwavering support and continued financial investment in the sports sector,” Msigwa stated.

He further revealed that the government is expediting the construction of sports fields and specialised sports schools across multiple regions, a move that aims to foster talent and elevate Tanzania’s performance on the international sporting stage.

Meanwhile Mwanza Regional Commissioner Said Mtanda, the host of this year’s SHIMIWI Games, expressed gratitude to President Samia’s administration for its continued investment in sports infrastructure.

He particularly noted the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art Talent Development Centre at Malya Sports College as a milestone that will significantly boost youth sports development in the Lake Zone and beyond.

On his part SHIMIWI Chairman, Daniel Mwalusamba, also lauded the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, as well as the National Sports Council (NSC), for their strategic oversight and efficiency in driving the national sports agenda.

“The coordination and execution of these games reflect a high level of professionalism and national commitment to sports development,” Mwalusamba said.

This year’s SHIMIWI Games carry the theme, “Sports for Public Servants Increases Productivity at Work – Show Up to Vote Peacefully in the General Elections on October 29, 2025, for Stability and Progress.”

In a timely message to participants, Mwalusamba emphasised the importance of peaceful civic participation ahead of the 2025 General Elections.

“We encourage everyone to listen to all candidates respectfully, engage peacefully during campaigns and mobilise fellow citizens to vote on October 29. This is key to preserving the stability and progress our nation continues to enjoy,” he added.

Running until September 16, the games bring together public servants from all corners of the country, promoting not only sportsmanship and national unity but also civic responsibility and democratic engagement.
