Tanzania enhances professional boxing regulations to safeguard boxers’ interests

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzanian government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the regulation of professional boxing in the country, as part of efforts to safeguard boxers’ interests and ensure the sector contributes to youth economic empowerment.
Speaking during the launch of the Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Commission (TPBRC) website, the Executive Secretary of the National Sports Council (NSC), Neema Msitha, said the move aims to enhance coordination systems and streamline the management of the sport to address longstanding challenges hindering its growth.
She noted that the introduction of the website will promote transparency, efficiency and accountability within the boxing sector, while enabling stakeholders to access important information more easily.
On his part, Chairman of the TPBRC Interim Committee, Patrick Nyembera, said the committee has identified several challenges during its tenure, including cases where some boxers have been denied their basic rights, such as payment for their fights.

He added that there have also been incidents of individuals exploiting boxers for financial gain without their consent, illegally sending them abroad, and forging commission documents to facilitate such activities.
“We will submit an official report to the government so that appropriate action can be taken against those responsible,” said Nyembera, emphasizing that the website will help curb such malpractices.
Msitha further warned that the government will not tolerate violations of rules and regulations, noting that measures are already being taken against those accused of exploiting boxers, including illegally sending them abroad.
She also urged stakeholders in the boxing sector to embrace reforms aimed at strengthening the industry, stressing that the new systems will enhance transparency and accountability for the benefit of all.
