Responsible parenting remains society’s greatest investment

DAR ES SALAAM: THE rapid advancement of technology has created immense opportunities for learning, communication and economic growth. Yet, it has also introduced new challenges that demand greater attention from parents, guardians, religious leaders and society as a whole. Raising responsible children has never been more important than it is today.
Across many communities, there are growing signs that parenting standards are declining. Increasing numbers of children are seen riding motorcycles as bodaboda operators at a young age, while others spend long hours in markets selling water sachets and various goods. Although economic hardship may contribute to these situations, children deserve care, guidance and education that prepare them for a better future.
Parents and guardians must understand that their responsibility extends beyond providing food and shelter. They must educate, advise, monitor and guide their children.
In an era dominated by smartphones, social media and digital influences, children require close supervision to help them distinguish right from wrong and make informed decisions about their future.
When children are left without proper guidance, many lose interest in education and seek quick sources of income. Some abandon school prematurely and enter the bodaboda industry without adequate preparation, skills or maturity. While honest work should be respected, young people should first be equipped with the education, discipline and knowledge needed to navigate life’s challenges successfully.
The responsibility of nurturing children should not be left to government institutions alone. Religious leaders, teachers, community elders and other stakeholders also have an important role to play. Through sermons, community programmes and mentorship initiatives, they can reinforce moral values, encourage education and help children develop positive character.

A strong nation is built on strong families. Parents who actively participate in their children’s lives contribute directly to the development of responsible citizens. Children who receive proper guidance are more likely to stay in school, pursue meaningful careers and contribute positively to society.
As technology continues to transform the world, the need for responsible parenting becomes even more urgent. Every child deserves protection, education and opportunities to thrive.
Parents, guardians, religious leaders and all stakeholders must work together to ensure that children are guided, supported and prepared for a productive future. The future of society depends on the choices made today.
