Parliamentarians back socioeconomic reforms

DODOMA: MEMBERS of Parliament have rallied behind President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s renewed push for accountability, integrity and discipline in the public service, saying the reforms are critical to accelerating national development.

Contributing to the debate on the President’s address delivered during the inauguration of the 13th Parliament on November 14, 2026, Gairo MP Ahmed Shabiby (CCM) urged public officials to support the Head of State by working professionally and prioritising national interests over personal gain.

He said the growing misuse of public resources was a clear indication that some officials in oversight institutions had failed to effectively execute their duties.

“We are witnessing rising levels of corruption in various sectors. Some officials are fearless and boldly engaging in embezzlement. Today, communities are more enlightened and can easily identify wealth acquired illicitly,” Mr Shabiby said.

He called on the Prime Minister, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba, to intensify action against corrupt or negligent officials in order to improve efficiency, including acting on public complaints and ensuring all implicated leaders are held accountable in accordance with the law.

Supporting the call, Special Seats MP for Youth (Pemba North, CCM) Zainab Abdallah urged civil servants to uphold integrity and honour the trust bestowed upon them by the public.

She commended the Prime Minister for conducting regular workplace forums, saying they provide clear direction on the government’s determination to strengthen discipline in the public service.

She further urged the Prime Minister to continue taking firm action against lazy and unprepared public servants who sabotage the government.

In her address during the Parliament’s inauguration, President Samia emphasised that the foundation of national success lies in the rule of law, integrity and accountability at all levels.

“To ensure citizens benefit from the country’s resources and receive the services they deserve, we will direct our efforts towards fighting corruption, embezzlement, negligence and unethical conduct. We cannot allow a few individuals to undermine national progress through selfish interests,” she said.

MPs also expressed optimism over the President’s commitment to improving both rural and urban road infrastructure.

Special Seats MP for Morogoro Region, Sheilla Edward Lukuba (CCM), said the increased budget allocation for the Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) reflects strong political will to ensure feeder roads remain passable throughout the year.

Contributing to the debate, Tanga Special Seats MP Husna Sekiboko (CCM) hailed the President for major reforms in the education sector, including the updated Education and Training Policy (2014, 2023 Edition), which emphasises skills based learning and aims to produce experts in data science, artificial intelligence, computer science and industrial technologies.

She noted that the Samia Scholarship Fund will help train scientists locally and abroad, while enhanced digital connectivity between rural and urban schools will support effective curriculum implementation.

Morogoro South East MP Hamis Shabani Taletale (CCM) said extending compulsory education to 10 years is a transformative move that will enable rural youth to benefit from practical and vocational training.
