THE Tanzania Forestry Service Agency (TFS) in Geita District has successfully planted a total of 12,550 tree seedlings as part of marking the 61st anniversary of Tanzania’s independence.
Acting Geita District Forestry Conservations Officer, Mr Sandusy Ngunyale, revealed this recently during an exclusive interview with ‘Daily News’, few days after the anniversary.
Mr Sandusy explained that the programme was implemented for three days from December 2nd 2022 during which a total of 1,150 trees were planted in various public institutions.
He added that on December 6th, a total of 2,200 tree seedlings were planted whereby on December 7th a total of 2,500 trees were planted. A total of 6,400 tree seedlings were provided for free to the Geita residents.
“I call upon all public and private institutions in the district to come and collect tree seedlings for free from our gardens and plant them in their households for us to achieve the district’s goal of planting 1.5 million trees for the season of 2022/23.
“Each household is encouraged to plant at least five trees, while for all schools in Geita District, each student must have a tree planted in the school surrounding,” he insisted.
Geita District Commissioner, Mr Wilson Shimo urged the Geita residents to keep supporting the government’s efforts by planting as many trees as possible especially in areas affected by deforestation.
“We must embrace patriotism, we do not need to see some individuals engaging themselves in environmental destruction acts, especially in reserved areas instead protecting them.
Shimo directed the institutions to cooperate with TFS officers to achieve the expected goals of planting enough trees to fight deforestation and mitigate climate change effects.
