Fresh boost for fisheries sector

TANGA: PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan is set to embark on an official eightday visit of Tanga Region from this Sunday, where among others, she will distribute 84 modern fishing and fibre boats to fishermen and seaweed growers in the region.

This initiative is part of the sixth-phase government’s efforts to stimulate the blue economy in the region.

Tanga Regional Commissioner (RC), Dr Batilda Burian said yesterday that during her upcoming visit to the region, President Samia will launch 34 modern fishing boats and provide 50 fibre boats to seaweed farmers.

Dr Burian said that Tanga is blessed with over 180 kilometres of coastline stretch along the Indian Ocean, offering significant potential to become Tanzania’s hub for fishing and seaweed production.

However, she noted that the region has yet to fully capitalise on this opportunity due to challenges such as a lack of modern facilities.

In an exclusive interview with this publication at her office yesterday, Dr Burian outlined key developments in the region’s blue economy, which is located in northeastern Tanzania.

She explained that many women in the region depend on seaweed production to meet their basic needs, but face several challenges due to the absence of modern infrastructure.

“The rollout of modern seaweed boats will enable women to engage in this economic sector more professionally and effectively,” she said.

In addition to the boats, President Samia will distribute over 28,000 gas cylinders to promote the use of safe and environmentally friendly cooking energy, Dr Burian added.

The RC said that the president is scheduled to visit and address the public in all the districts of Tanga Region.

“We are very excited that President Samia has chosen Tanga for this significant visit. Her eight-day stay will boost economic activities in the region and help address various challenges across key sectors,” Dr Burian stated.

The RC noted that preparations for the visit were on track and encouraged the citizens of Tanga to take full advantage of the opportunity, as the visit is expected to attract thousands of people
