After ruby, Mahenge adds spinel to its gemstone discovery list

MAHENGE: EPANKO Village, Ulanga District in Morogoro Region, has solidified its reputation as a global center for precious gemstones following the discovery and mining of spinel, a highly valuable gem. Spinel from Mahenge is recognized for its exceptional quality, rare colors, and durability, which distinguish it in the international market.

Spinel is a gemstone that comes in a variety of colors, including red, pink, purple, blue, and orange. It is prized for its high clarity and hardness, which allow it to retain its luster and withstand wear over time. Unlike many other gemstones, most spinels are mined without the need for heat treatment, a factor that significantly enhances their market value. For many years, red spinels were often mistaken for rubies, but they are now recognized as a distinct gemstone with unique properties.

Mahenge has gained international acclaim for its pink and red spinels that exhibit a striking, neon-like glow. This distinctive feature has made Mahenge spinels highly sought after by global gemstone traders and showcased at major international exhibitions, including the Tucson Gem Show in the United States, the Hong Kong Jewellery Fair, and the Bangkok Gem Fair in Thailand.
