Zanzibar commits to work with the World Bank in advancing education, health, energy, infrastructure sectors

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said his government will continue working with the World Bank to strengthen priority sectors, while calling for faster implementation of development projects so that citizens can benefit from them on time.
President Mwinyi made the remarks on August 19, 2026, when he met the World Bank Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa, Dr Ndiame Diop, at State House in Zanzibar for discussions on development cooperation between the World Bank and the Zanzibar government.
Dr Diop was accompanied by Firas Raad, the World Bank Division Director responsible for Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
President Mwinyi thanked the World Bank for its continued cooperation and support to Zanzibar, particularly in the education, health, energy and infrastructure sectors.
Speaking on education, President Mwinyi said the government has increased investment in the construction and improvement of school and college infrastructure, human resources and the use of technology to address growing demand resulting from population growth.
He said the government has also increased the education budget and will continue to prioritise the sector through the construction of schools, recruitment and deployment of more teachers, as well as the use of digital systems in education services.
According to President Mwinyi, the use of technology can improve efficiency in the delivery of education services and help reduce the impact of staff shortages in some areas.
In the health sector, President Mwinyi said the government is focused on building strong and sustainable healthcare systems rather than relying solely on short-term projects.
He said the approach is intended to ensure that health services are delivered efficiently and reliably to the people of Zanzibar.
The meeting was also attended by Khamis Abdulla Said, Permanent Secretary in the Zanzibar Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, along with other government officials and representatives from the World Bank.
