Z’bar youth urged to defend peace to fit tourism, dvt during cycling event

ZANZIBAR: YOUNG people have been called upon to play a central role in preserving peace and stability, essential pillars for fostering national development and social progress.

Speaking during a special cycling tour through the scenic landscapes of South Unguja as part of the Zanzibar International Sports Festival, South Unguja District Commissioner Othman Ali Maulidi highlighted the critical role of youth in safeguarding the future of the nation.

“Young people have a great opportunity and responsibility to maintain peace and drive development programmes,” Maulidi emphasised.

The tour, which drew cyclists and athletes from across the region and beyond, formed a key component of the Zanzibar International Sports Festival 2025, an event that celebrates athleticism through disciplines such as cycling and beach soccer.

Maulidi noted that the participation of international athletes in the festival serves as a testament to Zanzibar’s peaceful environment—one that continues to attract visitors, investors and partners.

“Peace is the foundation of progress. As we near the general elections, it is vital for both citizens and athletes to remain conscious of the need to preserve our harmony. Our growth in tourism and sports depends on it,” he added.

Echoing his sentiments, Mohammed Salim Mohamed, President of the Zanzibar Cycling Association, remarked on the economic and social impact of hosting international sporting events.

“The presence of global athletes not only enhances our visibility but also stimulates economic activity, especially in the tourism sector,” he said, encouraging the public to view sports as a strategic tool for elevating Zanzibar’s global image.

Local businesses have already started to feel the positive ripple effect. A hotel owner from Salam Café in Kizimkazi shared how the influx of visitors has boosted local income, offering both residents and the nation tangible economic benefits.

International participant Samuel Mwambusi from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) expressed heartfelt appreciation for the peace he experienced in Zanzibar.

“I am deeply moved by the peaceful atmosphere here. Back home in Goma, events like this would be nearly impossible due to ongoing conflict. I encourage the people of Zanzibar to continue cherishing and protecting their peace— it’s a treasure,” he said.

As the Zanzibar International Sports Festival continues to draw attention and admiration from the region and beyond, it stands as a shining example of how sports, tourism and peace are interwoven threads in the fabric of sustainable national development.
