DESPITE several efforts taken by the government in collaboration with various stakeholders to promote the rights of People-With-Disabilities (PWDs), the group still faces several challenges, including isolation, discrimination and even mistreatment.
First Vice-President, Mr Othman Masoud Othman made the statement here when opening a training for local government leaders, including community leaders (sheha), district and regional commissioners on issues of PWDs in Zanzibar.
He reminded that the United Nations (UN) Convention states that persons with disabilities are entitled to a full spectrum of human rights and fundamental freedom without discrimination.
Mr Othman emphasised that the revolutionary government has been taking various efforts to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy their rights including opportunities they deserve, calling upon individuals to support the efforts.
“Some of the Government ‘s interventions to safeguard PWDs include to review policy of people with disabilities of the year 2008 and the enforcement of a new law governing various issues of People with disabilities in 2022 in Zanzibar,” he said.
The vice-president also asked local government leaders to implement the law as it also pushes for better services to the PWDs, along with empowering all Shehas in the country to disclose and register people with disabilities in all their respective areas.
