YOUNG Scientists Tanzania (YST) has expressed appreciation on the plans by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to provide scholarships to Form Six best science subjects’ students in the country.

Co-founder and Senior Advisor of YST Dr Gozibert Kamugisha said the plan is productive as it would ensure the country has well trained scientists’ workforce that would help in attracting foreign investors.

Dr Kamugisha said Samia Scholarships will ensure the country has a good profile of trained scientists towards achieving sustainable development.

“There is no way you can achieve sustainable development in any particular country without having well trained scientists. We are talking about attracting foreign investors, if you don’t have a good profile of well-trained scientists, forget about it,” he said.

Dr Kamugisha was speaking during an exhibition organised by YST in Lindi for the students across the region to showcase their science research projects.

At the exhibition, 12 students with best projects from six secondary schools in Lindi Region were selected to compete at national exhibition scheduled for December 8th this year in Dar es Salaam.

The selected students have been working on the research and innovations for about four months before their projects were showcased at the Lindi exhibition.

“We have selected top six projects which are going to compete and represent the region (Lindi) at national exhibition which will be held on December 8th this year in Dar es Salaam,” said Dr Kamugisha.

He said the exhibition at the regional level will be conducted in every region before the national exhibition set for December this year.

Meanwhile, Dr Kamugisha said some 38 students with most successful research and innovative works selected through the exhibition have been provided with scholarships.

“Some are already engineers while others are doctors practicing in different areas of science,” he said, adding that some of the most impactful products have been commercialised and sold.

YST is an organisation aimed at building science culture among young people in Tanzania, giving them an opportunity to develop new scientific innovations to researches especially on issues facing communities.
