Yanga in tricky test

THE fifteenth round of the Premier League wraps up with two headline-making fixtures as Namungo host Young Africans at Majaliwa Stadium in Ruangwa Lindi, whereas Singida Big Stars welcome Coastal Union at Liti Stadium in Singida today.

Namungo hosts Yanga at Ruangwa under the floodlights for the first time and a well-refurbished Majaliwa turf as the encounter sets to kick off at 7:00 pm.

The hosts have lately lacked winning consistency in the league and they venture into the game with heads down after suffering a 3-0 setback from Singida Big Stars in their previous battle.

With 18 points from 14 games, Namungo currently sits in the 9th slot on the log knowing in advance that a victory in today’s match will drive them up on the ladders and here is where the tense part of the fixture centres.

On the other hand, a win to Yanga will open up a three-point lead at the table’s summit, as they will have 38 points from 15 games in their race to retain the Premier League title at the end of the campaign.

The Jangwani street boys claimed a late 1-0 win against Tanzania Prisons in their past match at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam with a 90th-minute strike from Feisal Salum separating the two sides.

At Liti Stadium, star-studded Singida Big Stars can cement their fourth place on the log if they successfully diffuse Coastal Union and walk away with maximum points at the sound of the final whistle.

From 14 outings, Hans Van Pluijm’s men have gathered 27 points after eight wins, three draws and three defeats which mathematically is a good run for them in the league and they are still active title contenders of the season.

The revival of striker Meddie Kagere is a boost for them to dream big as his scoring instincts continue to trouble goalies of opposite teams and so far he has contributed four goals to his account.

On the other hand, things are falling apart for Coastal Union, whose splint in the league is not convincing as they remain winless in six of their played league assignments.

Their recent game against Simba at Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga elapsed 3-0 in favour of the latter, a defeat which saw them dropping maximum points from the home turf.

After 14 matches, Coastal Union have managed three wins, three draws and eight defeats to accumulate 12 points and sit in 13th place.
