Workers losing jobs to receive benefits within 90 days

DODOMA: EMPLOYEES who lose their jobs can now receive unemployment benefits in a lump sum within 90 days under improved social security regulations, the National Assembly was told yesterday.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office responsible for Labour, Employment and Relations Dr Evaline Munisi said the arrangement falls under a special unemployment lump-sum programme introduced after consultations with stakeholders.
She was responding to Tunduru North MP, Ado Shaibu (ACT-Wazalendo), who questioned the government’s continued opposition to reinstating withdrawal benefits for workers who lose employment or work under shortterm contracts. Dr Munisi said the Minister responsible for Labour signed the new regulations in December last year following recommendations from stakeholders.

Under the arrangement, an employee who loses employment may choose to receive a special lump-sum payment within 90 days or opt for monthly payments equivalent to 33.3 per cent of salary for six months while preserving pension eligibility after retirement.
“This move was received with excitement, applause and celebrations from stakeholders in the social security funds,” she said. In his basic question, Mr Shaibu sought the government’s position on withdrawal benefits and when such a system would be reinstated. Dr Munisi said the current social security framework provides unemployment benefits rather than withdrawal benefits for workers who lose employment.
She added that the government improved the regulations in 2025 to strengthen unemployment support for affected employees.
“At present, the Government believes this arrangement adequately meets the needs of employees who lose their jobs,” added Dr Munisi.
