WiLDAF calls for joint action against gender violence

DAR ES SALAAM: (WiLDAF Tanzania) has called for stronger collective action to combat gender-based violence, particularly against women and children.

WiLDAF Tanzania Executive Director, Advocate Anna Kulaya, made the call recently during an awards ceremony held in Dar es Salaam to recognise individuals who have played an outstanding role in fighting genderbased violence.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Gender-Based Violence Network (Mkuki) and development partners, also honoured 16 champions for their commitment to promoting human rights and protecting vulnerable groups. Advocate Kulaya noted that communities are increasingly speaking out against violence and challenging harmful traditional practices.

“Today more people are breaking the silence, demanding justice and calling for accountability. This is an encouraging sign,” she said. She praised the government for strengthening justice mechanisms, including the expansion of gender desks and improved support services for survivors.

“We have seen meaningful progress in the justice system and in the professionalism of service providers assisting survivors,” she added.

Ms Kulaya also thanked development partners, including the Embassies of Switzerland, Finland and Ireland, as well as UNFPA and UNICEF, for supporting initiatives aimed at protecting women and children.

The ceremony brought together government officials, diplomats, civil society representatives, legal professionals and media practitioners committed to ending genderbased violence in Tanzania.
