WCO meeting calls for efficient tax, customs systems in driving sustainable economy

ZANZIBAR: THE Golden Tulip Airport Hotel in Zanzibar this week became a hub for regional customs and trade dialogue as delegates gathered for the World Customs Organization (WCO) Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) Regional Meetings, including the 32nd ESA Governing Council session.

The official opening ceremony was graced  by the3 Minister of Finance,  Ambassador Khamis Mussa Omar, alongside senior officials from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and representatives from member states across the region.

Addressing delegates during the opening session, Minister Khamis Mussa underscored the importance of efficient tax systems and customs cooperation in driving sustainable economic development under the conference theme, “Our Taxes, Our Development.”

“Taxation is not only about revenue collection; it is also a strategic instrument for social and economic transformation,” he said. “Strengthening customs procedures and facilitating trade across our borders will contribute significantly to regional prosperity and integration.”

The minister further emphasized the need for stronger collaboration among ESA member countries in addressing emerging trade and customs challenges while enhancing operational efficiency across the region.

The high-level gathering also reflects Zanzibar’s growing profile as a destination for international conferences and policy forums. Stakeholders in the events and conference sector have credited recent government efforts with helping attract major regional and global meetings to the Isles.

Mr. Ibrahim Mitawi, Chief Executive Officer of Showtime, noted that the increasing number of international conferences hosted in Zanzibar demonstrates growing confidence in the destination’s logistical and hospitality capabilities.

“Zanzibar continues to position itself as a strategic meeting point for regional and international engagements,” he said, citing recent high-profile forums hosted in the country, including World Bank-related meetings.

The WCO ESA meetings are expected to facilitate discussions on modernization of customs, trade facilitation, revenue enhancement, and regional cooperation among participating countries.

With delegates from across Eastern and Southern Africa in attendance, the conference is anticipated to generate practical recommendations aimed at strengthening customs operations and supporting economic growth throughout the region.
