TRA hosts WCO ESA regional meetings: A beacon of progress in East Africa

ZANZIBAR: THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has taken a significant step forward in fostering regional cooperation by hosting the World Customs Organization (WCO) East and Southern Africa (ESA) Regional Meetings this May. This initiative not only highlights TRA’s commitment to enhancing customs and revenue collection but also positions Tanzania as a leader in the East African region.

The meetings, which include the Regional Training Center on May 7-8, the 43rd ESA Regional Steering Group from May 11-14, and the 22nd ESA Governing Council on May 14-15, aim to strengthen collaboration among member states.

Commissioner for Customs and Excise (Tanzania Revenue Authority) Juma Bakari Hassan, made the Keynote speech emphasizing the role of customs as a catalyst for economic growth during the prep sessions on May 7th, 2026.

The meeting brings together representatives from 24 ESA member countries to discuss strategic, operational, and financial matters regarding customs administration.

Speaking at the conference Bakari noted that Tanzania is “committed to providing a platform for meaningful dialogue, technical exchange and strategic allignment.”

The objectives of the conferences include sharing best practices in tax administration, discussing strategies for improving customs efficiency, and addressing challenges faced by member countries in revenue collection.

Ibrahim Mitawi, CEO of Showtime, emphasized the significance of holding these meetings in Zanzibar, stating, “Zanzibar provides a unique backdrop for these important discussions, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and the potential for growth in the region.” He praised TRA for its exemplary tax collection policies, which have contributed significantly to Tanzania’s economic growth. “We are committed to sharing various information to make important decisions about taxes and customs here in our region,” he reiterated.

The positive outcomes of these meetings are expected to include enhanced capacity building for customs officers, improved regional trade facilitation, and the establishment of stronger networks among East African countries. By sharing knowledge and experiences, TRA aims to inspire other nations in the region to adopt similar successful practices.

As the meetings progress, the TRA’s leadership and commitment to effective governance are set to pave the way for a more integrated and prosperous East Africa, showcasing the potential that lies in collaboration and shared objectives.
