Zanzibar government hails quality healthcare services at the Lumumba hospital

ZANZIBAR: THE Social Welfare Committee of the Zanzibar House of Representatives has conducted a special visit to Lumumba Regional Referral Hospital to assess the progress of healthcare delivery and achievements recorded at the facility.
During the visit, committee members toured various hospital departments and observed the delivery of healthcare services, including diagnostic, laboratory and treatment services for various conditions, including heart diseases.
Speaking during the visit, Chairman of the Social Welfare Committee of the Zanzibar House of Representatives, Hussein Ibrahim Makungu, said the committee was satisfied with measures being taken by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the Ministry of Health to strengthen healthcare services at the hospital.
He said the establishment of the hospital represents a major step forward for the people of Zanzibar, particularly because it provides essential specialist services, including cardiac care, diagnostic testing and treatment, which previously required patients to seek medical attention outside the islands.
Makungu said the committee would continue to closely monitor developments in the health sector and provide advice where necessary to ensure that citizens have access to quality healthcare services that meet their needs.
For his part, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr Mngereza Mzee Miraji, said the visit was important as it enabled committee members to directly assess the progress and achievements made at Lumumba Regional Referral Hospital.
He said the government was continuing its efforts to strengthen healthcare services and ensure that people can access specialist medical care closer to where they live.
Dr Miraji said committee members toured several sections of the hospital, including diagnostic, laboratory and medical oxygen units, where they received briefings on the services provided and measures being implemented to improve care for patients seeking treatment at the facility.
The committee members expressed satisfaction with the progress observed and emphasised the need for continued provision of quality and specialist healthcare services to enable the hospital to serve the people of Zanzibar more effectively.
