TEA makes strides in improving learning environment

DODOMA: THE Tanzania Education Authority (TEA) has registered remarkable strides in improving the learning infrastructure and environment in the country.

Presenting the authority’s four-year implementation report to reporters in Dodoma yesterday, TEA’s Director General, Dr Erasmus Kipesha said the authority spent a total of 49.05bn/- to fund 3,768 projects focusing on improving the learning infrastructure in various parts of the country.

He said that the funded projects were implemented between 2021/2022 and 2024/2025 under the coordination of the National Education Fund.

Explaining activities undertaken since President Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed office, Dr Kipesha noted that TEA has also set aside 3bn/- for education infrastructure improvements to facilitate the smooth implementation of the newly launched curriculum.

A total of 20 schools currently offering technical and creative training are benefitting from the fund, while 320.9m/- has been allocated for the renovation of a library in Pemba.

He added that during this period, TEA collaborated with various stakeholders, including the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and BRAC, to execute projects aimed at improving the learning environment.

Through the TEA-UNICEF partnership, 13 schools have undergone renovation and infrastructure improvements, including the renovation of 16 classrooms in four schools, 57 pit latrines in four schools and nine science laboratories in four other schools, at a total cost of 834.4m/-.

Dr Kipesha further mentioned that the second phase of implementation, involving 35 additional projects worth 2.15bn/-, began in the current financial year under the TEAUNICEF collaboration.

Additionally, the construction of six teachers’ houses, valued at 150m/-, was carried out in partnership with the Flaviana Matata Foundation.

Under the “Skills for Their Future Project”, 60 laptops and 60 tablets, worth 136.6m/-, were distributed to three secondary schools, thanks to the collaboration between TEA and BRAC Maendeleo Tanzania.

“TEA calls upon public and private organisations, civil society, companies, individuals and education stakeholders to continue supporting government efforts to improve the education sector by contributing to the National Education Fund,” said Dr Kipesha.
