Misungwi told to improve services
MWANZA: MWANZA Regional Commissioner, CP Salum Hamduni has directed Misungwi District Council to intensify efforts to improve water services, revenue collection and education infrastructure while ensuring proper planning for the rapidly growing town.
CP Hamduni issued the directive on Wednesday when addressing district leaders and residents at the Misungwi District Council Hall during his introductory visit to the district.
On water services, he acknowledged that although some areas have access to water, supply remained inadequate to meet residents’ needs.
He said he has already discussed the matter with the responsible minister and that preparations were underway to pay contractors so they could return to project sites and resume construction.
On revenue collection, CP Hamduni challenged the council to improve its performance, noting that it had failed to exceed its collection targets for three consecutive years.
He said the council was expected to collect 25 per cent of its revenue target during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year, but had so far achieved only 20 per cent.
He urged leaders to identify innovative sources of revenue and strengthen collection mechanisms without imposing measures that could burden residents or undermine economic activities.

On education, Regional Commissioner said Misungwi faced a shortage of 166 classrooms ahead of student enrolment for the 2027/28 academic year.
He called for cooperation between the government, residents and other stakeholders to mobilise resources for classrooms and related infrastructure.
CP Hamduni also called for a comprehensive strategy to guide the development of Misungwi town, saying rapid expansion required proper planning to prevent land-use conflicts.
He said the planned merger of Misungwi and Kwimba would create additional development opportunities, making effective urban planning essential.
Meanwhile, CP Hamduni warned residents against encroaching on Mabuki Livestock Farm, saying the area was government property with a valid title deed.
