PARIS, FRANCE: TANZANIA is pinning its Olympic hopes on swimmer Sophia Latiff, who will compete in the Women’s 50m Freestyle event today at 12:00 PM.
Latiff is one of 79 swimmers contesting the event, which is divided into 10 heats.
Only the 16 fastest swimmers from these heats will advance to the semifinals.
Latiff, who will compete in Heat 5, will face stiff competition from a diverse group of athletes, including Kaiya Brown of Samoa, Eliane Douillet of Benin, Jovana Kuljaca of Montenegro, Kennice Greene of St Vincent and the Grenadines, Georgia-Leigh Vele of Papua New Guinea, Khema Elizabeth of Seychelles and Christina Rach of Eritrea.
The Tanzanian delegation at the Paris 2024 Olympics includes seven athletes: swimmers Latiff and Collins Saliboko, judoka Andrew Mlugu and runners Alphonce Simbu, Magdalena Shauri, Jackline Sakilu and Gabriel Geay.

Unfortunately, Saliboko has already been eliminated in the first round of the men’s 100-meter freestyle event. Sophia Latiff now carries the nation’s hopes in swimming, following Saliboko’s early exit.
Her performance in the 50m Freestyle could be Tanzania’s last chance for a swimming breakthrough at these Games.
Tanzania’s lone judoka, Andrew Mlugu, was eliminated in the round of 16.
Despite this, Mlugu’s participation marks a significant milestone, being only the second time Tanzania has been represented in judo at the Olympics.
His commendable performance highlights the progress and potential for judo in Tanzania.
As the Olympics continue, all eyes are on Sophia Latiff as she strives to secure Tanzania’s place in the semi-finals and potentially achieve a historic result for the nation in the pool.
