Tanzanian parents advised to identify, nurture and invest in their children’s talents

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Deputy Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Hamis Mwinjuma has urged parents and guardians to identify, nurture and invest in their children’s talents noting that a parent’s role is not to dictate what a child should become but to help them excel in their abilities.
The Deputy Minister made the call in Dar es Salaam stressing that it is important for parents to listen to their children and recognise their unique abilities alongside formal education.
According to the minister, every child possesses a unique ability or talent that deserves to be identified and developed while warning parents against discouraging children from pursuing areas in which they showed potential.
“If a child says they like football, do not immediately tell them it is just a game. If a child says they like singing, do not discourage them. If they show talent in the arts, help them develop it,” he said.
Elaborating, he said that nurturing a child’s talent does not mean abandoning education and encouraged them to support children in pursuing both academic knowledge and their talents.

“A person can be educated and, at the same time, become a sportsperson, artist or innovator,” he said.
Mr Mwinjuma further called on parents to become a source of encouragement for their children, noting that young people sometimes need more than words of reassurance that they can succeed.
He said consistent parental support and encouragement could give children the confidence needed to develop their abilities and pursue their aspirations.
