Tanzanian joins global deliberations on advancing women’s rights, gender equality  

NEW YORK: THE Tanzanian government has joined global deliberations on advancing women’s rights and gender equality during the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, taking place in New York, United States.

The meeting has the aim of discussing various issues agreed for implementation during the 2026 session of the meeting.

The country also participated in a meeting of gender and women affairs for member states of the African Union (AU) held on the sidelines of the global gathering.

Tanzania’s delegation was led by Court of Appeal Judge Barke Sehel, representing the Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dorothy Gwajima.

Other members of the delegation included the ministry’s Deputy Permanent Secretary Felister Mdemu and Director of Legal Services Eveline Makala.

Meanwhile, Tanzania also participated in discussions with UN Women focusing on strengthening global efforts to promote gender equality and empower women.

The 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women has brought together United Nations member states to discuss strategies for advancing women’s development and rights.

This year’s meeting is held under the theme: “Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices, and addressing structural barriers.”
