Mwanyika hails the progress as the rehabilitation of the seed lab nears completion

MOROGORO: THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Industry, Trade, Agriculture, and Livestock has commended the progress of the rehabilitation of the National Seed Laboratory, whose construction is now 86 per cent complete.

The committee, led by its Chairperson Deodatus Mwanyika, made the remarks during a visit to the project run by the Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI) in Morogoro Region and praised the Ministry of Agriculture and TOSCI for the quality of work on the laboratory, describing the project as an exemplary investment in strengthening seed quality control in the country.

Speaking during the inspection, Chairperson of the committee, Deodatus Mwanyika, urged the institute to increase efforts in addressing fake seeds and provide sufficient education to farmers on the use of certified seeds.

The Director General of TOSCI, Nyasebwa Chimagu, said the institute is promoting and facilitating investment to strengthen seed certification services in the country.

Welcoming the committee, Morogoro Regional Commissioner Adam Kighoma Malima said the region has become a model for agricultural transformation due to its fertile land and growing production of commercial crops.

He cited crops such as cloves, cocoa, avocado, coffee, oil palm, sugarcane and rice among key agricultural products driving the region’s economic growth.
