Tanzanian affirms issuance of mining permits for mineral exploration in protected areas

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government will continue issuing mining permits to citizens and investors seeking to undertake mineral exploration and mining activities in protected areas where such activities are legally permitted, subject to compliance with established requirements.

Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa, said this in the Parliament in Dodoma today, August 26, 2026, during the Questions and Answers session.

Dr Kiruswa said the permits would be issued in accordance with requirements set by relevant institutions, including the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS), the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA) and the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).

He said the Forest Act permits mining activities in forests managed by TFS provided that the miner holds the required licence or permit and has completed an environmental impact assessment.

The Deputy Minister also said the Wildlife Conservation Act sets specific requirements governing mineral exploration and mining in game reserves, including the completion of environmental impact assessments and compliance with other statutory requirements.

 He stressed that mining activities in protected areas would therefore continue to be subject to applicable laws, environmental safeguards and conditions imposed by the relevant authorities.

 The Government’s position is aimed at balancing mineral development and investment with the protection of forests, wildlife habitats and other environmentally sensitive areas.
