Tanzania intensifies public education on Union matters to bolster national unity, solidarity, patriotism

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has continued to implement the Strategic Plan for Public Education on Union matters to promote national unity, solidarity and patriotism while strengthening the Union between Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

The public education programme focuses on issues that have already been resolved, with 24 of the 25 longstanding Union matters addressed by the 2025/26 financial year. The remaining issue, which concerns financial matters, is still under consideration.

Deputy Minister in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Reuben Kwagilwa, made the remarks in Parliament in Dodoma today, November 6, 2026, while responding to a question from Tumbatu MP Juma Othmani Hija, who wanted to know the government’s plans to educate citizens about the resolved Union matters.

Responding, Mr Kwagilwa said the government had taken deliberate measures to raise public awareness of Union matters, including informing citizens about issues that had already been resolved.

He said the education programme was being delivered through various platforms, including radio, television, newspaper articles, publications and books on the Union, national exhibitions, conferences and social media. Other channels included transport services such as the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Azam Marine boats.

Mr Kwagilwa added that the Vice-President’s Office had developed a nationwide public education programme targeting different regions, districts and social groups to ensure that citizens across the country access information about the Union.

“Honourable Speaker, our office currently has a comprehensive plan to provide public education on Union matters across all regions and districts using various approaches. We will ensure that citizens receive this education,” he said.

He further said the office had prepared educational content to be disseminated through influential content creators, particularly those with a strong following among young people. He noted that the public would soon begin accessing the information through these stakeholders.

Mr Kwagilwa was responding to a supplementary question from Mr Hija, who commended the Vice-President’s Office for the public education initiative and sought clarification on whether additional channels would be used to reach more citizens.
