Tanzania to save 32bn/- for importing power from Ethiopia

ARUSHA: THE Government, through the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), expects to save 32bn/- annually by purchasing electricity from Ethiopia via Kenya. This initiative aims to reduce power losses and ensure better electricity distribution in the Northern Zone.
According to a statement by the Government Chief Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, most of Tanzania’s electricity is generated in the southeastern part of the country. As a result, it has to be transmitted over long distances, leading to significant energy losses. These losses cost the country billions of shillings annually.
To address this issue, Msigwa stated that the government has decided to source electricity from Ethiopia through the East African Power Pool grid system. The electricity from Ethiopia is considered more affordable and is expected to help Tanzania reduce frequent power outages, especially in the Northern Zone.

The move is part of Tanzania’s broader strategy to enhance energy efficiency and ensure stable electricity supply across the country. By integrating into the regional power grid, the country aims to optimize its electricity distribution and minimize transmission losses.
Furthermore, Msigwa emphasized that Tanzania has a history of purchasing electricity from neighboring countries to supplement its energy needs. The country has previously imported power from Zambia, Uganda, and Kenya to supply border regions such as Rukwa, Kagera, and Tanga.
This latest initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to improving the energy sector and ensuring reliable power supply for economic growth. The purchase of electricity from Ethiopia is expected to contribute to cost reduction and enhance the stability of the national grid.
