Tanesco warns of weekend power cut in Dar, Zanzibar

DODOMA: THE Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has announced planned power outages in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, and the Coast region as part of a major infrastructure upgrade at the 220-kilovolt Ubungo power station.
The outages, expected to occur intermittently, will begin on Saturday and continue until Friday.
According to a statement from TANESCO’s Directorate of Communications and Public Relations, the upgrade aims to improve electricity supply following a surge in demand that has placed significant pressure on the existing system.
To address this, TANESCO will install a high-capacity 300 MVA transformer at the Ubungo substation to enhance power distribution and ensure reliable service for customers.
“This upgrade is essential to meet the growing electricity demand in Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, and the Coast Region, which has overwhelmed the current infrastructure,” the statement read.

As a result, various areas in the affected regions will experience scheduled power outages at different times throughout the upgrade period.
Furthermore, the statement explained that TANESCO will also take advantage of this downtime to conduct maintenance on critical infrastructure ahead of the rainy season.
The corporation has also apologized for the inconvenience and assured the public to release regular updates on the progress of the work until its completion.
“The corporation apologizes for any inconvenience caused during the period when electricity services will be unavailable in some areas and will continue to provide updates on the progress of the work until its completion,” the statement concluded.
