Tanzania to expand grazing land to 6 million hectares

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has announced plans to increase surveyed and designated land for livestock grazing from 3.49 million hectares to 6 million hectares over the next five years.
The announcement was made in Parliament today, January 28, 2026, by the Deputy Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Kamani, while responding to a question from the Member of Parliament for Ngorongoro, Yannick Ndoinyo, who asked about the government’s strategy to expand grazing areas from 3 million to 6 million hectares as stipulated in the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Election Manifesto.
In his response, the Deputy Minister said the government is committed to implementing the CCM Manifesto in line with the speech delivered by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, during the official opening of the 13th Parliament on November 14, 2025.
He said that within the next five years, the government will increase surveyed and designated land for livestock activities by 2.51 million hectares, bringing the total to 6 million hectares.

“The ministry I lead, in collaboration with ministries, departments and institutions mandated by law to plan and implement proper land-use planning, has already begun preparing a five-year strategy to set aside 2.51 million hectares for livestock activities,” the Deputy Minister said.
He added that the implementation of the plan aims to improve the livestock sector, reduce land-use conflicts, and enhance productivity among livestock keepers nationwide.
