Tanzania tables 1.24tri/- budget for agricultural transformation

DODOMA:THE Ministry of Agriculture has tabled 1.24tri/- budget for the 2025/2026 financial year, with a clear focus on accelerating growth in the sector through implementation of the Tanzania Agriculture Master Plan 2050.

Tabling the estimates in Parliament on Friday, Minister for Agriculture, Mr Hussein Bashe, said the ministry will prioritise six key areas that align with ongoing sectoral reforms initiated in 2022/2023.

“The execution of the 2025/2026 budget will build on progress made over the past three years and launch new projects aimed at modernising and transforming the sector,” he said.

The projects include expansion of irrigation infrastructure, establishment of mechanisation centres, improved access to agricultural inputs, post-harvest management, value addition, large-scale cluster farming, production enhancement, construction of markets, research, extension services, and subsidised input programmes.

The implementation of these initiatives is expected to increase agricultural growth, specifically crop sub-sector growth to 5 per cent, raise strategic crop production from 1.45 million tonnes to 2.28m tonnes, ensure national food self-sufficiency at 130 percent, and increase agricultural export earnings to around USD 4 billion.

Additionally, the government plans to expand irrigation coverage to 1.2 million hectares, as part of long-term efforts to safeguard against climate shocks and improve productivity.

To support this agenda, the Ministry of Agriculture has requested a total of 1.24tri/- for the upcoming fiscal year.

Of this amount, 702.3bn/- is allocated for development projects, while 136bn/- will cover recurrent expenditure.

Minister Bashe reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring inclusive agricultural growth that transforms rural livelihoods, boosts food security, and strengthens Tanzania’s position in regional and global agricultural markets.
