Tanzania spends 1.06bn/- in bringing NIDA registration services to rural citizens

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has spent 1.06bn/- in the first phase of bringing National Identification (NIDA) registration services closer to citizens, particularly those living in rural areas.

Responding to a question in Parliament in Dodoma today, November 2, 2026, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Ayoub Mohammed Mahmoud said the funds were spent during the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year, enabling the launch of registration services in communities.

He said the government would continue extending the services to other areas to improve access to National Identification Card registration.

The question was raised by Tunduru South MP, Eng Fadhili Chilombe, who wanted to know the government’s plans to reach rural residents and enable them to access National Identification Card registration services within their communities.

On the time required to obtain identification documents, the Deputy Minister said applicants who complete registration with the National Identification Authority (NIDA) receive their National Identification Number (NIN) via SMS within three days, while the physical identity card is expected to be issued within one month.

He added that the government was continuing to improve information and communication technology systems, as well as registration and identification guidelines and procedures, to enhance efficiency and reduce the time citizens wait to obtain their NIN.
