Tanzania, Kenya agree to strategic ties in the agribusiness to enhance food security

DODOMA: TANZANIA and Kenya have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation in the agricultural sector, with a focus on boosting trade, investment and enhancing food security within the East African region.

The agreement was reached during a discussion between the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Gerald Mweli, and Kenya’s High Commissioner to Tanzania, Catherine Wahome in Mtumba, Dodoma.

During their talks, the Permanent Secretary reaffirmed Tanzania’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Kenya in the agriculture sector, referencing a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two countries.

The MoU, signed on May 4, 2026 in Dar es Salaam during a state visit by Kenyan President William Ruto, outlines cooperation in various agricultural areas and is being implemented by technical teams from both countries tasked with developing a joint action plan.

The agreement was signed by Tanzania’s Minister for Agriculture, Daniel Chongolo, and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mutahi Kagwe.

The two sides also discussed the importance of harmonising phytosanitary certification requirements in order to eliminate non-tariff barriers to trade and facilitate increased cross-border agricultural trade between Tanzania and Kenya.
