Tanzania connects natural gas infrastructure to 2,512 households  in four coastal regions

DODOMA: TANZANIA has connected a total of 2,512 households to natural gas infrastructure across Mtwara, Lindi, Pwani and Dar es Salaam regions as part of ongoing efforts to expand access to cleaner energy, Parliament was told today.

Deputy Minister for Energy Salome Makamba revealed this at the parliament in Dodoma today, May 8, 2026,  when responding to a question from Special Seats MP Asha Omar Rashid, who wanted to know the government’s plan to improve access to gas energy in rural areas.

In her response, the minister said that the government, through the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), continues to implement various natural gas distribution projects, with 425 households connected in Mtwara, 677 in Lindi, 530 in Pwani and 880 in Dar es Salaam as of April 2026.

Additionally, she said that the government, through the Rural Energy Agency (REA), is also rolling out a programme to distribute 452,445 subsidised six-kilogram liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders at a 50 per cent subsidy to promote the use of clean cooking energy in rural and peri-urban areas.

Moreover, she encouraged private sector investment in LPG distribution infrastructure in rural and peri-urban communities to expand access to clean energy while adding that the ongoing research in both urban and rural areas is helping to identify the most suitable infrastructure for efficient gas distribution.

According to her, the findings will guide better delivery models for natural gas supply while also opening up new opportunities for public-private partnerships aimed at ensuring more Tanzanians benefit from clean and affordable energy.
