Tanzania announces teaching posts for 2026/27, especially for areas facing acute shortage

DODOMA: THE Tanzanian government has announced plans to recruit teachers in the 2026/27 financial year, saying successful applicants will be posted to areas with the greatest need.

However, the government has acknowledged that the country continues to face a significant shortage of teachers, particularly in science subjects, noting that most unemployed teachers are those specialising in non-science subjects.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Dr Festo Dugange, made the remarks today, Monday, November 2, 2026, while responding to MPs’ questions on the teacher shortage, which he said currently stands at more than 33 per cent.

In his main question, Bukoba Rural MP (CCM), Dr Jasson Rweikiza, sought to know when the shortage of teachers in Tanzanian schools would be brought to an end.

Responding, Dr Dugange said the government recognises the challenge of teacher shortages in both primary and secondary schools, which has been driven by an increase in student enrolment following the implementation of the fee-free education policy and the construction of new schools across the country.
