Tanzania and Congo seek to revive ties in diplomacy, security, agriculture, energy sectors

BRAZZAVILLE: TANZANIA and Republic of Congo have agreed to enhance cooperation in key areas, including diplomatic cooperation, security, agriculture and energy development.

This came after Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba’s meeting with Congolese officials in its capital, Brazzaville.

The PM returned to Tanzania from Brazzaville, where he represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 61st Annual Meetings of the Board of Governors of the African Development Bank.

During his visit, the Prime Minister held bilateral talks with Congolese Prime Minister Anatole Collinet Makosso, where the two leaders discussed diplomatic cooperation, security, environmental conservation, agriculture and energy development.

Speaking during the meeting held at Boulevard Alfred Raoul in Brazzaville, Dr Nchemba said his visit aimed not only at participating in the AfDB meetings but also at strengthening diplomatic relations and promoting regional cooperation, peace and development across Africa.

He outlined Tanzania’s strategies which are to modernise agriculture through irrigation, expand tourism and strengthen environmental conservation initiatives.

The Prime Minister also conveyed appreciation to Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso for inviting President Samia to the summit.

Dr Nchemba further used the opportunity to seek Congo’s support for Tanzania’s candidate for Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Deo John Nangela, whose election is scheduled for December this year in New York City.

In response, Prime Minister Makosso said Congo has much to learn from Tanzania, particularly in the energy sector, and commended Tanzania for hosting the “Mission 300” African energy initiative aimed at ensuring 300 million Africans gain access to electricity by 2030 while calling on African countries to unite in mobilising resources to advance the programme.

On the sidelines of the AfDB meetings, Dr Nchemba also held discussions with Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Africa region, Mohamed Janabi on cooperation in the health sector across Africa.

The Prime Minister additionally met East African Community (EAC) Secretary General, Stephen Mbundi and Secretary General of the Forum of Parliaments of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (FP-ICGLR), Deo Mwapinga to discuss regional cooperation and development issues.
