Call for provision of better machinery to improve the Mtwara Port’s efficiency

DAR ES SALAAM: STAKEHOLDERS at Mtwara Port have called on the government to provide new equipment to improve the efficiency of port operations, citing a shortage of equipment and the poor condition of much of the existing machinery.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss preparations for the upcoming cashew marketing season, participants said the equipment shortage could affect the port’s operations despite its important role in handling and transporting various types of cargo, including cashew nuts.

The Deputy Director General of the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Engineer Baraka Mdima, said the authority was prepared to address the challenges while ensuring that cashew nuts produced in Tanzania’s southern regions are transported through Mtwara Port.

Officially opening the meeting, Mtwara District Commissioner Abdallah Mwaipaya said the port has contributed to increased employment opportunities, investment prospects and government revenue through activities linked to the cashew industry.
