Iringa takes proactive measures against El Niño

IRINGA: IRINGA Municipality has begun inspecting bridges, drainage systems and flood-prone settlements as part of early preparations to minimise the impact of forecast El Niño rains.

The council’s Disaster Management Committee met Wednesday to assess areas most vulnerable to heavy rains, including river valleys, low-lying areas and settlements near water infrastructure.

Municipal Director, Ms Zaiana Mlawa said the goal was to ensure the municipality prepares in advance to prevent and minimise the damage the rains could cause.

“Our goal is to ensure the municipality is prepared in advance so that we can prevent and minimise the effects of the forecast rains,” Ms Mlawa said.

The Committee directed heads of department and ward leaders to inspect bridges, drainage systems and vulnerable settlements, and to educate residents on precautions during heavy rains.

It also called on government institutions, NGOs and residents to report disaster incidents promptly to enable swift emergency response.

Residents have been urged to follow weather updates from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) and take appropriate precautions.
