Tanzania advances its health and population agenda at the global stage

NEW YORK: TANZANIA is advancing its health and population agenda on the global stage, with Minister for Health Mohamed Mchengerwa leading the country’s delegation at the 59th Session of the Commission on Population and Development in New York, United States.
The high-level meeting, which began on April 13 and runs through April 17, 2026, is focused on strengthening the link between population dynamics, technology, research, and sustainable development, while helping countries craft data-driven and innovation-led policies.
According to Mr Mchengerwa, during the forum, key discussions are centred on the role of technology in reproductive and public health, including emerging contraception methods, research in reproductive health, and the growing use of telemedicine and digital health platforms.

Additionally, the meeting also places emphasis on improving access to health services for youth and women, a priority area for Tanzania’s health sector reforms.

At the forum, the minister is accompanied by Deputy Permanent Secretary in charge of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices, Emmanuel Tayari, who is expected to deliver a country presentation highlighting Tanzania’s progress and priorities.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr Mchengerwa is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with heads of international health organisations and ambassadors from various countries to discuss strategic partnerships in the health sector.
The session has drawn participation from more than 193 countries, alongside major global health stakeholders, underscoring its importance as a platform for shaping future population and health policies worldwide.
