Taifa Stars, let 2027 journey begin with a statement

ZANZIBAR: THE road to AFCON 2027 may already be secured, but for Taifa Stars, the real journey towards making history begins today in Zanzibar.

When Taifa Stars walk onto the pitch at the New Amaan Complex in Zanzibar to face Guinea-Bissau, they will not be chasing a ticket to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Tanzania secured a place at the finals as one of the three co-hosts alongside Kenya and Uganda.

It matters because a team does not become ready for AFCON simply because its place in the tournament is guaranteed. Readiness must be earned, tested and refined through competitive football.

That is precisely what these qualifiers should provide for Taifa Stars: a proper taste of the demands that await when the continental showpiece comes to East Africa next June.

So, against Guinea-Bissau, the message must be clear: play to win and then do it again in the next match and the one after that.

These qualifiers should be approached with the seriousness of a team fighting for its life in a qualifying campaign.

Every victory should strengthen belief; every difficult game should expose something that needs fixing; every mistake should become a lesson.

There is no better preparation than competitive football and Taifa Stars must use these matches to discover just how good they can become before AFCON 2027 arrives.

Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have been handed a historic opportunity as co-hosts. But hosting Africa’s biggest football tournament is only part of the story.

The greater challenge is to put together a Taifa Stars side capable of making a genuine mark when the tournament begins.

The signs of progress are already visible. Tanzania recently made history at the last AFCON in Morocco by reaching the knockout stage of the competition for the first time.

That achievement showed that Taifa Stars can compete beyond the group stage and can stand toe-to-toe with some of Africa’s established football nations.

Now comes the harder task, building on it. The country’s preparations for 2027 are also gathering pace, with major infrastructure projects progressing and significant investment being made in facilities for the tournament.

The stadiums, roads and other infrastructure will provide the stage. But when the whistle blows, it will be the players who must write the story.

That story should begin with hunger. There must be no complacency simply because qualification is already assured.

There must be no treating these matches as glorified friendlies. Guinea-Bissau must be respected, the game must be taken seriously and the three points must be pursued with determination. Go and make Tanzania proud.
