Taifa Stars’ AFCON 2027 campaign gets 500m/- boost as NBC hands over new bus

DAR ES SALAAM: A national football team cannot prepare effectively for major international competitions if basic logistical needs remain unresolved. For Tanzania’s Taifa Stars, dependable transportation has now received a significant boost after the National Bank of Commerce (NBC) handed over a new Yutong bus valued at more than 500m/- to the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF).
The contribution comes as Tanzania intensifies preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda from June 19 to July 17, 2027. The tournament will be the first AFCON edition jointly hosted by three countries, adding significance to preparations across the region.
The new bus was officially handed over at Gymkhana Grounds in Dar es Salaam in a ceremony that brought together key football stakeholders, including NBC Director of Retail Banking Elibariki Masuke, TFF President Wallace Karia, TFF Director of National Teams Almasi Kasongo, Taifa Stars Head Coach Miguel Gamondi, players and other representatives from the football fraternity.
While a bus may appear to be a simple logistical asset, its importance to a national team extends well beyond transportation. For players and technical staff operating around demanding training and competition schedules, reliable transport can contribute to better planning, greater convenience and improved conditions between football engagements.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Masuke said NBC’s latest contribution demonstrates the bank’s continued commitment to Tanzania’s football development and represents another stage in its long-term investment in the sport.
NBC has committed 32.6bn/- over five years towards Tanzanian football through its sponsorship of the NBC Premier League, NBC Championship and NBC Youth League.
According to Masuke, the bank’s involvement in football is not limited to placing its name behind competitions. He said the sport creates a platform for identifying and developing young talent while also supporting employment and economic opportunities for players, their families and other people whose livelihoods are connected to the football industry.
The connection between domestic football and the national team is particularly important. Masuke noted that NBC is encouraged by the number of Taifa Stars players who have developed through competitions sponsored by the bank.
He argued that the presence of these players in the national team provides an indication of how investment in domestic competitions can contribute to the development of players who eventually represent Tanzania at international level.
The new bus, therefore, is part of a broader football ecosystem in which competitions, talent development, national-team preparation and corporate support intersect.
Masuke said the vehicle would help Taifa Stars manage training and competition commitments more efficiently while reducing some of the transportation difficulties that can affect preparations.
For players, dependable transportation can also provide an environment in which they can rest and recover between activities. For technical teams, it offers greater certainty when planning movements around training sessions, matches and other national-team responsibilities.
The contribution also comes at an important time for Tanzania as preparations for AFCON 2027 gather pace. CAF has confirmed that the tournament will run from June 19 to July 17, 2027, with Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda serving as co-hosts.
The three host nations have already secured places at the final tournament as co-hosts, although they are participating in the qualification campaign. CAF says Tanzania is in Group L, while the qualifying programme began in September 2026 and will continue into 2027.
Against that backdrop, Masuke called on other stakeholders to increase their support for Taifa Stars and Tanzania’s other national teams. He said AFCON 2027 should be viewed not only as a football tournament but also as an opportunity for youth development, business activity and wider economic participation.
TFF President Wallace Karia welcomed NBC’s contribution, describing it as timely because the bus previously used by the national teams was more than 10 years old.
Karia, however, pointed out that the transportation challenge has not been completely resolved. TFF still needs additional buses to support the national women’s team and various youth teams, meaning further investment will be required to strengthen transportation across the federation’s national-team structure.
His remarks highlight an important aspect of the latest contribution: while the new bus provides immediate support, the transportation needs of a modern football federation extend across several teams and age groups.
TFF Director of National Teams Almasi Kasongo similarly said the vehicle had arrived at a time when several Tanzanian national teams are qualifying for international competitions, increasing the demand for reliable transportation.
Kasongo confirmed that the new bus would be available for use by all national teams under TFF. He thanked NBC for its contribution and appealed to other stakeholders to support the federation in transportation and other areas required to improve the teams’ preparations and competitiveness.
As Tanzania moves closer to AFCON 2027, the focus will inevitably extend beyond what happens on the pitch. Successful national-team preparation depends on several interconnected factors, including player development, coaching, facilities, logistics, financing and institutional support.
NBC’s latest contribution addresses one of those practical requirements. More importantly, it adds to a wider partnership that the bank says is intended to support football from domestic competitions through to the national-team level.
With AFCON 2027 bringing the continental competition to East Africa, preparations are already moving into a more intensive phase. For Taifa Stars, every improvement in planning, preparation and logistics will form part of the broader effort to ensure Tanzania is ready for the demands of competing on home soil.
