State prepares youths to compete in labour market
DODOMA: THE government has outlined a number of measures it is instituting to help the youth across the country to compete in the labour market in and outside the country.
Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youths, Employment and People with Disabilities) Ridhiwani Kikwete outlined the measures in the National Assembly yesterday, when responding to a question posed by Mpendae CCM Legislator Toufiq Salim Turky.
According to the minister, among the measures include implementing skills development programmes and encouraging practical training through the leading employment sectors such as agriculture under the Building Better Tomorrow (BBT), entrepreneurship and mining via Mining for Better Tomorrow (MBT).
Also, in the list of measures, is to improve the 2014 Education and Training Policy, 2023 edition.

Recently, the government launched the new policy that is set to address long-standing challenges, particularly the skills gap among young people graduating from schools.
Under the new policy, students will graduate with both academic knowledge and practical skills, better preparing them for the job market.
Furthermore, the minister said, construction of strategic infrastructure that propel economic growth has enabled a good number of youths to be employed and facilitated knowledge transfer.
Giving examples, the minister said the implementation of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP) and Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) infrastructure has enabled Tanzanian youths to acquire knowledge from foreign experts.
Other measures involve insistence of the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and conducting on-job training for employees and entrepreneurs.
Mr Ridhiwani assured the House of the government commitment to continue preparing youths to be able to compete in the labour market.
According to him, since the government started implementing various programmes focusing on skills development among youths, a total of 143,449 of them have benefited from the initiatives.
