Scholarships set to benefit 3 UDSM Kiswahili students

DAR ES SALAAM: IN a bid to complement government efforts in nurturing Kiswahili, the ALAF Limited has offered scholarships to three students undertaking Kiswahili Master’s Degree Programme at the University of Dar es Salaam’s Institute of Kiswahili Studies.

Speaking while handing over cheques to the three beneficiaries, the ALAF External Affairs Manager, Hawa Bayumi said the move was in a bid to promote Kiswahili in and out of the country.

“Kiswahili is one of the biggest assets that we inherited from the Founding Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, hence we are obliged to compliment government’s efforts in promoting it in and out of the country,” she said.

She further noted that the University of Dar es Salaam has always played a key role in organising and executing the Literature in Kiswahili Awards, which ALAF sponsors alongside its sister companies in Kenya and Uganda, and it brings together writers from all over the region.

“The two are key to ALAF in promoting Kiswahili and we will continue supporting these initiatives for the sake of Kiswahili,” she stressed.

She said the beneficiaries include Asha Ally Mustapha who will receive 3.9m/-, Asia Omary Saidi (3.9m/-) and Fredrick Venance (3.9m/-), making a total of 11.7m/- of scholarship.

She called on the beneficiaries to utilise the scholarships well by ensuring they excel in the programme so they can further promote Kiswahili further in a much better way as they will have mastered the language quite well by the end of the programme.

The UDSM Acting Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof Rose Upor thanked the ALAF for the warm gesture and consistency in offering the scholarships as they have been receiving a lot of the requests from students.
